Should I keep my 360 laying down or upright
This was in an interview with an Xbox 360 engineer:
"Q: Is keeping the 360 horizontal more safe than keeping it vertical?
A: I don't think so. Vertical exposes more surface area and volume to heat exchange with cooler room air. And I think opens more vent holes. Just don't let it fall over."
However, keep away from external fan solutions.
There is no way to improve the internal airflow of the Xbox 360 console with an external fan.
The engineer, that designed the Xbox has this to say about external fans:
"In order for those fans to do any good, they would have to increase the volume of air coming through the box w/o adding heat. I think those things are powered through the USB hub, which is specced at 5 volts, 1/2 an amp. So very little heat added.
But the piggybacked fan would have to run at a higher volume that the box fan in order to unload it and make it spin faster, pulling more air over the heatsinks.
Would be an easy test to run. Just tape a dry cleaning bag to the back with and w/o the extra fan and time how long to fill. Or if you have access to one, an anemometer is a test instrument that measures airflow and would give a more accurate reading.
Note : the Nyko Intercoolers draws power from the 360 power-source and it looks like surefire way to potentially make things worse."

Regardless of whether I'm playing a game or not, the fan runs loud even if I'm at the dashboard.
It starts out calm, then builds up louder and louder like you're waiting for a time bomb to explode.
Months after this started to happen, I got the RRods. Does anyone know how to prevent this and what might have caused it?
EDIT: I see...
So how do you adjust the voltage?
Just means your console is running hotter. The fans run from 5volts to 12 volts adjustable speed varrying by the temperature in the console. So the hotter it is the faster the fans will spin.
Direct replacement for original OEM fan
Moves 58% more air, yet is 7% quieter

When..........you get free online with the ps3 and you don't have to send it to repair every month because it's such crap.
Well, that's true. But since there's not a lot of great games out for it, it's kind of expensive for a large paperweight.
If I place a normal fan pointing at an Xbox 360, will it prevent in from overheating in some way? If so, should I point it towards the front, back, side, etc?
I don't want some kind of watercooling system/built-in extra fan, as I don't want the warranty voided. Nor the Nyko Intercooler - some say that just makes it worse.
Use a small fan pointed to the side area. We raised our 360 up on small wood blocks (allows 1.5 in of space under) with the fan off to the side which allows the air to circulate all around the system. Doing fine.
The fan in the back of my Xbox 360 is messed up. It was working fine for over a year until recently it started to spin the opposite way. So now it is blowing air out of my Xbox instead of blowing towards the heat sinks in my Xbox. Please help me if you can. Thanks.

Steve Ballmer confuses the Xbox 360 Blu-Ray situation, Major ...
Oh dear, here we go again …
Microsoft’s big Kahuna, Steve Ballmer, has once again made comments that have caused some confusion amongst the Xbox 360 fan constituency, this time regarding the availability of Blu-Ray accessories for the company’s line of products, which many console followers took to mean that Blu-Ray players would be made available for the Xbox 360.
If it were true, this would be a major turn of events for the future of the Xbox 360, after the HD-DVD versus Blu-Ray format war resulted in Blu-Ray becoming the preferred disc format going forward, meaning Microsoft’s investment in HD-DVD was a case of betting the wrong horse, making the manufacture of the extra, external Xbox 360 HD-DVD drives a poor choice over the option of providing a Blu-Ray offering instead.
