I'm going to buy an Xbox 360 Pro soon but I know it overheats easily and might get the Red circle problem. I'm going to buy a mini-fan to place near the Xbox so that I can help prevent cooling. Can you tell me where/how I should position the fan to help the xbox cool efficiently?
I have a PS3 but it's not as good as the xbox 360, too bad it has that problem though :(.
well to PREVENT cooling i'd actually try to cover the vents in the back with tape so no air can get in or out. even wrap it in a towel. Now to promote cooling, they make an actual product for this, just go with that its only 10 bucks

I think it is now certain my cooling fans are broken. It is sitting near a window which is usually open so it can cool better but it still gets 2 RRODs, meaning it has overheated. I tried playing the new cod5 Verruckt zombie map, and i got to wave 9 and it turned itself off. I registered my xbox for a repair and it says the warranty is out of date, so does anyone know where/how i can get it fixed for free? I live in UK by the way.
You can't get it fixed for free if it's out of warranty.
If you're certain it's the fans that are bust then buy a replacement fan. You can get them off ebay for under £15 inc p&p, and they shift more air, are a bit quieter and have lights in if you like that sort of thing.
The case is easy enough to take off, and seeing as you're out of warranty anyway it doesn't matter about voiding it.
i have an xbox 360 cooling fan and i think something is wrong...... everytime i plug in the cooling fan to the xbox 360 and turn it on it gives me the red circle.... after i take the cooling fan out the xbox works normally giving me a green circle..... wat should i do... should i risk trying it again......
It means the inner processor in your xbox 360 is dieing. Do the warranty thing if you still have it.
I just bought a Nyko Intercooler for my 360 today. Everything was working fine until about my third play through when I got the Red Ring of Death. I turned it off, waited, turned it on again, it was still there.
However, when I unplugged the cooling fan and turned it on, it was working fine. Is there something wrong with my 360 or the cooling fan?
It is a problem with the cooling fan. You are not alone in having RRoD issues with using the Nyko cooler. The below link is to the Amazon.com Intercooler reviews and they are less than pretty. Take back the cooler and get a refund.

If you store your video game console, your home theater system, as well as a HTPC (home theater PC or equivalent Mac) in your entertainment center, you might be generating quite a bit of heat. The Xbox 360 is notorious for overheating. Heat isn't good for your gear. That means only one thing: you need to find a way to cool it down. The cheapest way that we've found to do so is to use discarded computer fans, which are quite easy to set up.
Computer fans work hard to cool down PCs and Macs. They are also quite compact, moderately noisy, and are easy to work with for this little project. You can find these pretty much anywhere. It's just a matter of finding a few that are still in working order. Once you've got those, and the basic wiring sorted out, all you have to do is mount them. Depending on how your entertainment center is made, you'll most probably have to either add a back panel or saw some holes into it. Once those are done, all that's left is mounting the fans. There are different ways of powering the fans. The easiest is to buy USB powered fans and plug them directly into the USB ports of the computer and the consoles. Otherwise, you'll just have to fiddle around with some wiring to power them from a power supply.
