I DO NOT have the gold subscription and never play games online. However I do download demos and other stuff using a silver account. Can I chip my console without getting my silver account banned?

Yea, if you are using a modded console, Microsoft can still ban you from Xbox live even if you are not connected to the internet, do not play online, AND do not have the ethernet cord plugged in. They have a memory space in the xbox that randomly does checks for mods and if it finds it, it will store that data until you do plug in an ethernet cord, and then WHAM! the banhammer occurs. I have flashed firmware on mine and play online but I just make sure I play games that are stealthed correctly, but even then I can still get caught.

I want to chip my Xbox 360 elite myself, I don't care about Xbox live as I don't use it. Also Ive been told to avoid mod-chips.

Just a heads up that modding your Xbox 360 will mean that your warranty is void. So if you get the RROD you will not be able to to get it fixed for free.

I believe there is software for this now. Chipping is a bad idea - it can ruin the console and will void your warranty. Either way it is illegal to do such things to the consoles

I just heard about the RRoD and I really don't want them. I've seen some stuff about Jasper chips near eliminating the problem? We just got an Xbox 360 Pro Bundle. Is there some indicator of having the chip?

Dont listen to the answer above and open it up because that would void your warranty and possibly break it. on the back though there is a sticker with the voltage and if the voltage is 14.1 then you have a falcon which is one step back from a jasper chip. 12v is the jasper chip and 16v or so is the really old chip. so the less voltage the better.
