You need to buy one of the hard drives made for the 360. It just snaps onto the top of the machine.

Also what does 256 MB memory mean?

You can go here to see the differences between the consoles that Microsoft offers.

One of the main differences is that the Arcade will not be backwards compatible. You will only be able to play 360 games on it, not original Xbox games.

The second main difference is the storage. 256 MB memory card is tiny. You'll be able to have some save games from some of the smaller games, but the more involved games, like Halo 3 or Oblivion, have large save game files. Also, you won't be able to store downloadable content with only a 256 MB memory card. You need a hard drive for that. Those can cost you up to $180 for the biggest one.

Depending on how much you plan to store on your 360, you can get away with one of the smaller hard drives. I would suggest saving a little extra money and purchasing one of the more expensive models instead of the arcade. It will be worth it.

The Xbox 360 Arcade is $199 and its matte white, comes with a 256MB memory card, wireless controller, standard A/V cable and 5 arcade games (PacMan, UNO, Luxor 2, Boom Boom Rocket and Feeding Frenzy). You can't play original Xbox games on it because the software emulator needed to play them is stored on the hard drive. Which is doesn't come with.

The Xbox 360 20GB Premium has been discontinued but you can still find it in some stores for around $249 but it will be harder to find than the others. Its replacement, the 60GB Pro, is $299 and is matte white with a chrome disc tray, comes with a 60GB hard drive, wireless controller, component HD A/V cable, Xbox Live headset and ethernet cable. The only difference between the 20GB Premium and 60GB Pro is the hard drive size.

  • Microsoft to Ban “Unauthorized” Memory Devices for Xbox 360 - X ...

Microsoft Corp. said officially that starting from the next software update for Microsoft Xbox 360 video game console it would prohibit usage of “unauthorized” storage devices on the system.

“When Preview Program members start receiving the Xbox 360 system update next week, one of the changes is that unauthorized memory units will no longer work with the Xbox 360. If you’ve moved your profile or saved games onto one to “back it up,” you’d better move it back onto an authorized Xbox 360 storage device prior to taking the update,” the official Xbox 360 blogger Major Nelson wrote.

Microsoft Xbox 360 game consoles are equipped with USB ports, thus, theoretically support all available flash USB memory sticks. However, Microsoft plans to limit support of memory sticks to only “licensed” devices. For example, Xbox 360 512MB memory unit costs $29 from Microsoft, which is a very high price for a 512MB USB flash stick.
