Launch PS3

What are the differences between a launch PS3 and the ones which are being made at the moment?

I am going to buy a new PS3 so this would be really helpful.
Also the fact i am going to buy a uk one make any difference?

The launch 60GB PS3 (in the US and Japan) had a hardware chip - Emotion Engine - that allowed backwards compatibility with PS and PS2 games. Even if you could get hold of one of these it wouldn't work for you, as you are on PAL.

The launch 60GB in the UK (Mar 07) uses software emulation to play older games. The current crop of 80GB and 160GB have no backwards compatibility.

Bottom line, if you have a bunch of older games that you still want to play, find a secondhand 60GB. Otherwise, get a new one off the shelf. Hope this helped.

PS3 Launch Documentary- A look and insight on the launch day of the infamous Playstation 3..

My uncle is offering me a trade: His original launch PS3 with backwards compatibility for pretty much 300 bucks/my new ps3.

I know this is a ripoff for him but he's really nice and offered me this trade even though he knew it.

So I was just wondering how much would it cost exactly to buy an original PS3 launch model?

if you are lucky you could get one on ebay for less but if you wanted a new one or one that was complete and in mint condition from a trusted seller it will probably be more like $400 on ebay. They are more in demand because of the backwards compatibility and everyone says all PS3's are the same but they arent.

My opening night 60GB ps3 has better renderings then my buddys 80GB ps3. When the lowered the price the first time around the decreased some chip sizes and in doing so it lost some power. I noticed it when we were playing motorstorm together. The tracks in the mud on my system are fully rendered across the level and you never ever see pop in. but on his system (and other people 80GB's) you will see pop in on some of the more detailed areas. like the muddy tracks. just something to think about. I hate pop in so I like my PS3 better.

Before you go on please take this into account:

The PS2 was out for a year and the original xbox games looked better then whatever the ps2 had out at the time.

The N64 launced a year later and was better looking then any ps1 games out at the time as well.

Shouldnt PS3 launch games look better then the current 360 generation of games seeing as though the ps3 is more powerful?

Ehh launch games are usually crappy. I don't know if you remember launch ps2 games, but they were baaad. I'm a huge baseball fan and EA's first PS2 baseball game, triple play baseball, was BAD. It was worse than the ps1 one. MVP baseball was a >>HUGE<< improvement over triple play for the ps2. I don't think game manufactures get the final system in time to produce any real games to take advantage of all the system has to offer.

I was at a site that a person was selling one for $1600 and two people were asking to buy. Could one really sell for that much?
That would be the 60g with Talladega Nights.

Yeah, a brand new launch 60GB PS3 sells for a LOT of money because it has been discontinued for a long while now (over a year).

Plus, the 60GB PS3 has the Emotion Engine chip and it can play around 99% of all PS1 and PS2 games and that is what makes it really valuable because the 80GB PS3 that had backwards compatibility that replaced the 60GB PS3 after it was discontinued couldn't play as many PS1 and PS2 games.

But, the main reason why the launch 60GB PS3 sells for more money is because they are very rare and are hard to come by brand new. Many people (even me) consider the 60GB PS3 the best PS3 model.

What I mean is how many are they supposed to release after the launch date. I want a PS3 but will not be getting one on November 17th. Are there any figures on how many will be released in the following months? Will they come out again soon after or not?
No I am not interested in buying one for that much money. I am wanting to buy one sometime after the holidays. Thanks for the answer but I am married and have my own money...do not need to get it from the parents. Haha. But I have always been a Playstation player and would rather have a PS3 instead of an XBox or Wii. Just my preference.
Oh and I was a Nintendo kind of person but with the GameCube it seemed like they were targeting a young audience with the games they made. I like the Playstation games

SONY are struggling a lot to make them. They will be quite rare for a long period of time. There will most likely be at least one more shipment of them before christmas (or "holiday season" if you're P.C.)

At least you've got a chance of seeing one, they aren't scheduled to be out here until March next year, and I bet we get less than the 80,000 you guys got on launch date.
